At The Priory Witham Academy, we foster a sense of enjoyment and curiosity within mathematics and provide opportunities to show our children how it is interconnected through our lives. At the forefront of mathematics teaching is ensuring children acquire a deep, long term, secure understanding of the subject through a mastery approach. We instil the belief that by working hard at mathematics children can succeed.
Our mathematics curriculum covers a wide range of skills, which include: recall of facts, reasoning and problem solving. Our curriculum is designed for our children to reason about number and solve a variety of problems presented in a range of ways. Mathematics helps children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Alongside this integral part of our curriculum, we aim to nurture personal qualities, such as: resilience, perseverance and a sense of personal endeavour to be successful.
Our mathematics curriculum is taught in line with the National Curriculum. We provide children with a range of experiences to represent number in a variety of different ways. This is taught primarily through a range of manipulatives, most notably: Numicon, Base 10 and small apparatus. We provide children with a variety of concrete experiences to help shape their understanding of mathematics. Once children become confident with a particular concept, we move flexibly through the CPA model (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract). Underpinning children’s mathematical ability is the recall of facts. Children enthusiastically learn their times tables, number bonds and other key facts through a variety of methods, which are then applied across the wider curriculum not just mathematics.
