Homework & Independent Learning - Secondary
Homework is an important part of learning at the Academy because:
- Teachers can respond to any misconceptions students may have about learning in the classroom and can make better decisions about what to teach next;
- Students have the opportunity to practise learning and remember more. Once students start seeing success, this will boost their motivation to do well.
- Students can build positive habits around organisation and develop independent learning skills for the next stages of their education;
- Learning extends from the classroom and ensures students are ready to learn in lessons.

We recognise organisation and independence do not necessarily come naturally or easily to every student. Building good habits can take time. To help students be successful in the above aims, teachers will set work:
- To check for understanding;
- Helping students to remember more, apply their knowledge and make connections to new learning;
- On Satchel – used regularly and routinely. Teachers will reinforce the importance of homework and ensure they are aware of the consequences if it is not completed. They will also give them clear details of the type of work they will be set and how they will be expected to submit it;
- That is appropriate for the class and encourages students to think hard about their learning.
Students should:
- Check Satchel regularly (parents/ carers have a login to help support this);
- Complete homework set to the best of their ability;
- Seek out teachers if they are unsure of any aspect of the task.
Efforts to cpmplete homework will be rewarded through making progress, building independent learning skills for the future and improving their general organisation. This in turn should have a positive impact on students wellbeing and preparedness for lessons. Teachers will reward students with achievement points if they feel students have gone above and beyond with their independent work. Students also have the opportunity to extend their learning further and earn positive behaviour points.
For more information about the independent learning set by each subject and in each key stage, please visit the Curriculum pages.
All homework will be set on Satchel One. We would encourage parents to regularly check this platform in order for them to see the variety of homework being set. Access this using the following link:
